First sign of autumn

Field Note No. 17

Date: 8 September 2026

Status: Left where they are

Two small clusters of autumn crocus have appeared at the base of the main gate, growing at the foot of the ivy-covered tree.

Colchicum autumnale. They arrive without leaves, which come later in spring. The flowers push through bare, with no foliage to announce them.

A welcome injection of colour. And a reminder that autumn has arrived.
