Following the water

Field Note No. 6

Date: 11 June 2026

Status: Under observation

It started with a puddle spreading quietly across the bar floor.

Water has a patient sort of intelligence. It doesn't force its way through a building. It simply keeps looking until it finds the route nobody expected.

The cause turned out to be surprisingly simple. A tarpaulin beneath a waste pipe had slipped, sending rainwater bouncing back into a skylight instead of away from it.

A few stones later, the leak had stopped.

The more interesting discovery was how many layers of thinking already exist inside this building. Flat roofs feed tanks. Waste pipes weave unexpected routes. Every alteration belongs to another alteration made years before.

Eventually the roof will be reconsidered as part of a wider restoration.

For now, we're learning its language.

Old buildings don't usually reveal themselves all at once.
