Found under the carpet

Field Note No. 13

Date: 21 August 2026

Status: Uncovered

It started as curiosity.

Helen pulled back a corner of carpet in one of the bedrooms. Beneath it, underlay. Beneath that, board. Beneath the board, this.

We believe these to be Victorian floor tiles. Intact. Deep burgundy and dark green, the pattern still crisp beneath the dust of however many decades.

They will need a gentle clean. But they are all there.

Hidden under successive layers of what felt, at the time, like improvement.

The Hall has been holding onto more than we thought.
