Status: Spotted, and removed

Our groundsman flagged it. Pretty flowers, he said — but don't touch the pods.

He was right on both counts.

The plant is Himalayan balsam. Soft, purple-pink flowers. Easy to walk past without a second thought. Most people do.

It is one of the UK's most invasive non-native species. Its seed pods fire up to 800 seeds per plant when they burst — from wind, from contact, from very little at all. It spreads fast, outcompetes native plants, and is listed under Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

The name Impatiens — Latin for impatient — tells you something about its character.

We found one plant on the estate. Removed by hand before it could seed. Disposed of properly.

It is already established in the ditch along Wash Lane. Easy to admire from a distance. Less so, once you know.
