What the trees were keeping to themselves

Field Note No. 2

Date: 11 May 2026

Status: Ongoing

The trees already had red dots painted on them when we arrived.

It seemed straightforward enough.

An independent survey revealed something more significant: around eighteen trees required urgent removal.

When they came down, many revealed the same surprise.

Solid trunks.

Empty centres.

Decay had been quietly working away for years.

Nothing was wasted. Branches became mulch for pathways and flower beds. Larger logs became firewood, stacked neatly in a new wood store waiting for colder days.

The Hall has a habit of reminding us that endings and beginnings often happen at the same time.

Even fallen trees keep finding ways to be useful.
